DATU SICAO FALLS in Tamayong, Calinan, Davao CitySeptember 17, 2014
DATU SICAO FALLS in Sitio Datu Sicao, Purok 6, Barangay Tamayong
District of Calinan, Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines
I will consider this as one “easier said than done worn out” climb.
“Experience, Mountain Climbing and River Trekking”
CALINAN, Davao City, Davao del Sur, Island Mindanao, Philippines – a good number of people say that the key to real beauty is simplicity. This wise saying ring true for Calinan, for despite being not popularly known to both foreign and local tourists, its land has beautiful scenery of rich flora and fauna.
District of Calinan, known as the “Fruit Capital of Davao”, while on traveling way to our destination you can see around besides the road a garden full of different variety of vegetables being planted and most popular that takes pride of its bountiful harvest is the durian and banana. Calinan is around 26 kilometers away from Davao City.
One of the main attractions that can be must-see tourist spot in Calinan is the Datu Sicao Falls, a famous mountain climbing site known to many mountaineers and nature’s lovers.
Located at Datu Sicao, Purok 6 in Mt. Sicao Village, Barangay Tamayong, District of Calinan, Davao City. Visitors are ensured of a fun and rewarding mountain and river trekking experience as a beautiful and magnificent waterfalls await those who would come to an end the itinerary.
This natural attraction can be easily reached from Davao City proper by taking jeepney or a taxi going to the Bangkerohan Terminal then riding a bus or a van going to Calinan. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at the Buyzone Store. Jeepneys and single motors going to Tamayong Purok 6 are available from there. The trek from Sitio Datu Sicao, Purok 6 up to the Sicao falls approximately lasts for 8 hours (from Purok 6 to Datu Sicao area usually takes at about 5 hours of climbing and then Datu Sicao camping area to Sicao falls at about 3 hours (1.5 hours of it is river trekking).
The trek is very easy. Some mountaineers considered it as a minor climb and a perfect start to those who want to try out before joining major climb and often visited during holy week, as mentioned by our tour guide. You need to have great staying power, endurance and patience to be able to reach the destination.
But first you must stop at Mt. Sicao Village, Purok 7-B where you need to be registered and had a short briefing. The villager’s they do this so that they will have data record of people who enter and be given knowledge about the place.
Start again trekking and you will experience mountain climbing and river trekking while at the end a cold and lots of beautiful falls is waiting for you to enjoy.
It was a seemingly endless view of water falling against mammoth rocks, and the occasional plot of land of green that were the wild blue berries that thrived in the area.
It is always good to discover new places and experience new escapades. A trip to Datu Sicao Falls with my Byaheng Mindanaw Team will certainly give one a unique out-of-town experience that is primarily enjoyed through cherishing the country’s natural beauty.
As always there is nothing to compare the beauty of nature, the clear crystal water, the coldness, the calmness of the place makes you think how we are closer to the God creation.
